This morning I made an important personal discovery. The drop off in sales of a new book release on Amazon after 30 days is like, A THING.

Amazon waterfall

OK – it’s a waterfall not a cliff, but way prettier than the Amazon logo

I thought the 30 day cliff was a myth (no rhyme intended), mainly because I’d never experienced a good run in sales in the first month before to notice a drop off. I thought it was just something people  idly speculated about like the Loch Ness Monster, Big Foot or funny ITV sitcoms. But my word is it real.

Sales of the new Ingrid Skyberg book, Kill Plan, were increasing daily – much to my ‘pinch me I’m dreaming’ amazement – then overnight on day 30 they decreased by exactly 40%. Those algorithms are really good at maths. The slope on the sales graph is precipitous.

Amazon 30 day cliff sales drop off

See – told you it was steep

Now, don’t get me wrong – I’m still completely bowled over and thrilled by the success Kill Plan has enjoyed – it’s selling more than any of my other books ever sold combined.

I am NOT complaining – Kill Plan continues to sell very nicely – I’m just marvelling at the very real cliff that previously I’d only heard others talk about.

No wonder some authors of shorter fiction rush to get out a new book every month – got to feed that hungry Amazon monster.

However, it’s just not possible for full length thriller novels (at least not for me). I can’t even type that quickly.

But I do have a novella in the pipeline and the first draft of book three is a third written, so I hope to have something to satisfy the Amazon beast very soon.

In the meantime, not to miss the opportunity of a plug, Kill Plan is still only 99c/99p on Amazon and will be for a little while longer. So you can snap up a copy if you haven’t already.
