I am absolutely delighted to share something really special with you today: the sample files for the audio version of Fresh Doubt. Eva had always wanted to get audiobooks made of the Ingrid Skyberg FBI Thrillers, but when she got ill her priority was getting as much written of future books as possible. I always knew that, when there was time, it would be my job to get the audiobooks recorded and released. I wish it had been possible to get the audiobook ready for release today – Eva’s 50th birthday – but we’ll have to make do with the first few chapters.

As Ingrid is American, Eva always wanted a female American narrator for the Skyberg books, but I feared it was going to be difficult to find an actress who could then handle the British accents of characters like Natasha, Ralph and Angela Tate. How wrong I was…

Shortly after Eva died, I was looking for a venue to hold her 50th birthday party. I told the events manager of one place that I was hoping her 50th would also double up as a launch party for an audiobook. ‘Do you need a narrator?’ she asked. ‘Well, yes, I do,’ I replied. I was intrigued as she had an American accent. But instead of suggesting herself, she opened her laptop and started to play me some audio recordings of a play about Sappho she had directed (being an events manager, it turns out, was just a way of paying the bills). The actress, Victoria Grove, plays every part in the play, and after a few minutes I’d heard enough to know she was phenomenal. I had found Ingrid!

It turns out the events manager, who’s name is Jessica, wasn’t American at all, but Canadian. After our meeting, I hung around for a while and carried on reading Fresh Doubt (I have been re-reading Eva’s back catalogue to help get the voice right for the next book), and while I was there I came across a passage about ‘Jessica, a Canadian in London…’ Needless to say, I booked the venue!

Sadly, Victoria’s work schedule has meant it hasn’t been possible to finish the audio version of Fresh Doubt in time for Eva’s party tonight, but I hope these first three chapters whet your appetite for the finished version, which will be released next month.
