If you haven’t had your crime drama needs satisfied by the magnificent Broadchurch or the thoroughly adorable Scott & Bailey, ITV1 is about to launch another thriller for your delight and entertainment.
The Ice Cream Girls
Based on the bestselling Dorothy Koomson novel of the same name, the three-part series follows the story of two teenage girls who are accused of murdering their schoolteacher in 1995. Seventeen years later, Poppy, convicted of the murder, is released from prison and returns to her childhood seaside home. Meanwhile, Serena, the other girl, has been free to live her life, building a career and a family.
Poppy has maintained her innocence throughout and is determined to prove it. Serena has buried the whole thing and is only now forced to confront the past as she also returns to her former home in Ashcliffe.
I’ve got to admit, though in theory this drama should be right up my street (psychological thriller, female protagonists, whodunnit element) judging by the short clips I’ve seen so far, I’m not entirely convinced ITV have a ratings winner on their hands with this one.
The first episode will air on ITV1 April 19th at 9pm. There’s a behind-the-scenes video available here that might help you decide whether it’s worth setting the box for.
